Your own domain
Use your own domain (www.yourname.com) for your site in two steps: point www at your site, then forward the bare domain to www.
How it works
- Point www at your site. Add a CNAME record named
wwwwhose value is your site’s address below. - Forward the bare domain (yourname.com, with nothing in front) to www.yourname.com. A bare domain can’t take a CNAME record, so registrars offer forwarding (often free) instead.
- After a few minutes, open the site’s card in My Account, choose Domain, enter www.yourname.com and connect it. We check the record, issue the certificate and move your site to it.
Your site’s value is on its card in My Account, under Domain. It looks like yoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
Keep the full stop at the end of the value. Without it, some DNS providers add your own domain to the end and the record won’t work.
Want a different word than www, such as portfolio.yourname.com? Use that word as the record’s name; you won’t need step 2.
GoDaddy
1. Point www at your site
- Sign in, open My Products, and choose DNS next to your domain.
- Find the existing CNAME record named
www(GoDaddy adds one pointing at@) and edit it, or choose Add New Record → CNAME. Name:www. Value:yoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- On the same page, open Forwarding and choose Add next to Domain.
- Forward to
https://www.yourname.com, type Permanent (301), without masking.
Forwarding takes over the bare domain’s @ record; that’s expected.
Namecheap
1. Point www at your site
- Open Domain List → Manage next to your domain → Advanced DNS.
- Add New Record → CNAME Record. Host:
www. Value:yoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- Still in Advanced DNS, add a URL Redirect Record: Host
@, valuehttps://www.yourname.com, Permanent (301), unmasked. - Delete any other record on host
@(A, CNAME, or an older redirect), or it can win over the redirect.
New records usually work within 30 minutes.
Squarespace Domains (and former Google Domains)
1. Point www at your site
- Open Domains, choose your domain, then DNS → DNS Settings.
- Under Custom records, add a CNAME: Host
www, Datayoursite.host.archiveindustry.site. - If a Squarespace preset already uses www, remove that preset first.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- In the domain’s settings, look for Domain forwarding (or Redirects) and forward the bare domain to
https://www.yourname.comas a permanent (301) redirect.
Cloudflare
1. Point www at your site
- Open your domain → DNS → Records → Add record.
- Type CNAME, Name
www, Targetyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site. - Set Proxy status to DNS only (the grey cloud). With the orange cloud, we can’t see the record and can’t issue your certificate.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- Add an A record: Name
@, IPv4192.0.2.1, Proxied (orange cloud). It’s a placeholder: Cloudflare answers before it’s used. - Then Rules → Redirect Rules (or Rules → Overview, template “Redirect from root to WWW”): when the hostname equals
yourname.com, redirect tohttps://www.yourname.comwith the path kept, 301, query string preserved.
Cloudflare has no “forwarding” switch; the redirect rule is free on every plan.
Porkbun
1. Point www at your site
- Open Domain Management → DNS next to your domain.
- Add a CNAME: Host
www, Answeryoursite.host.archiveindustry.site. - Delete the default wildcard record (a CNAME whose host is
*) and any other www record.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- In Domain Management, open URL Forwarding for the domain and forward the bare domain (leave the subdomain empty) to
https://www.yourname.com. - Under advanced settings, choose Permanent (301); Porkbun’s default is temporary (302), which also works.
IONOS
1. Point www at your site
- Go to Domains & SSL, open the domain, and add the subdomain
wwwif it isn’t listed. - Next to
www, open the gear → DNS → Add record → CNAME. Point toyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.(no http:// or https://).
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- For the bare domain, choose Adjust destination → Forward domain and forward to
https://www.yourname.comwith an HTTP redirect, not a frame redirect. - Don’t also tick the option that forwards the www subdomain: www should keep pointing at us.
Hostinger
1. Point www at your site
- In hPanel, open Domains → your domain → DNS / Nameservers.
- Edit or replace the existing
wwwrecord (Hostinger often adds a CNAME or A record for it) with a CNAME: Namewww, Targetyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- With a Hostinger hosting plan: in hPanel, Websites → Redirects, redirect
yourname.comtohttps://www.yourname.com(301). - Domain only, no hosting: Hostinger may not offer forwarding. Use www on its own, or move your DNS to Cloudflare (free) and follow those steps.
Network Solutions
1. Point www at your site
- Open My Domain Names → Manage → Advanced Tools → Advanced DNS Records.
- Add Record → CNAME: Alias
www, refers toyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- Network Solutions sells forwarding as Web Forwarding; if your account has it, forward
yourname.comtohttps://www.yourname.comwithout masking.
Without Web Forwarding, use www on its own, or move your DNS to Cloudflare (free).
Bluehost
1. Point www at your site
- Open Domains → your domain → DNS (DNS Zone Editor).
- Edit the existing CNAME for
www(or add one): points toyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- With a Bluehost hosting plan: the site’s Domains tab → Redirects → Add Redirect, from
yourname.comtohttps://www.yourname.com, Permanent (301).
Domain only, no hosting: Bluehost doesn’t offer redirects; use www on its own, or move your DNS to Cloudflare (free).
Wix
1. Point www at your site
- In Wix, open Domains → your domain → ⋯ → Manage DNS Records.
- Under CNAME (Aliases), edit the
wwwrecord (or add one) to point toyoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- Wix doesn’t forward a domain to a site hosted elsewhere, and its name servers can’t be changed. Share
www.yourname.com, or transfer the domain (or move its DNS) to another registrar.
DirectAdmin (hosting control panels)
1. Point www at your site
- Open DNS Management for the domain and add a record: Type CNAME, Name
www. - Value:
yoursite.host.archiveindustry.site.with the full stop at the end. DirectAdmin adds your own domain to any value without one, which breaks the record (it becomes…archiveindustry.site.yourname.com). - Delete any A record named
www.
2. Forward the bare domain to www
- DirectAdmin forwards through the hosting on its server: leave the bare domain’s A record pointing at that server, and under Advanced Features → Site Redirection, redirect
/tohttps://www.yourname.com/(301). - Or ask your host to add a 301 redirect from yourname.com to www.yourname.com.
Checking it worked
- Changes usually take a few minutes, sometimes up to a few hours.
- When you connect the domain in My Account, we tell you if the record isn’t there yet, or if your DNS provider added your domain to the end of the value.
- Menus at these companies change from time to time. If a step doesn’t match what you see, search their help for “add CNAME record” and “domain forwarding”, or write to us and we’ll help.
